Oct 6, 2018 Cemetery marking honoring Revolutionary War Patriot Luann McDaniel at the Mechanicsburg, IL cemetery. Ceremony and dedication of the marker is scheduled for Saturday at 2:00 P.M. with reception to follow at Com-patriot Bob Dennison’s farm.

Oct 13, 2018 Springfield Chapter Meeting at 11:00 at the MCL Cafeteria, 2251 Wabash Ave., Springfield.

Oct 26-27, 2018 Combined Great Lakes District and Illinois Society Board of Managers Meeting at the Wyndham City Center Hotel, Springfield. Call 217-789-1530 and ask for the Sons of the American Revolution rate, $121.00 plus tax free parking and breakfast included.

July 5-10, 2019 National Society Sons of the American Revolution 129th Congress Costa Mesa, CA at the Orange County/Costa Mesa Hilton Hotel. SAR discounted room rate is $169.00 plus tax.

July 9-15, 2020 National Society Sons of the American Revolution 130th Congress Richmond, VA at the Marriott Hotel.

Step Up & Volunteer

The chapter Recording Secretary position is vacant and needs to be filled. Currently Chapter President Drew Robinson is doing double duty by temporarily filling the vacant position while also serving as Chapter President. If you are interested in the Recording Secretary position, contact President Robinson or Vice President Stan Buckles.

Passing of Member

Chapter Compatriot Paul Charles Strohecker (1931-2018) passed away earlier this year in Lena, IL. Paul’s Patriot was John Strohecker who was a Sargent in the PA line. In addition to the SAR, Paul was a Navy veteran serving from 1950 to 1953 and was a member of the American Legion for 65 years.

Springfield Chapter member Richard (Dick) Chamblin was installed as the Illinois Society State President by National Society President Larry Guzy during the May ILSSAR annual meeting in Springfield.

Chapter and Members Recognized

With NSSAR President General Larry Guzy in attendance and helping present awards at the 2018 Illinois Society Annual Awards Dinner and Board of Managers Meeting, the Springfield Chapter was recognized with two awards. The chapter was recognized for attending all four Illinois Society Board of Managers Meetings. The chapter was the recipient for the Joe Smith Newsletter Award for publishing four newsletters of four pages or more during 2017.

Individual awards included the State Distinguished Service Medal presented to Compatriot Richard Chamblin.

Chapter President Drew Robinson received both the Meritorious Service and Silver Roger Sherman Medals.

Karl Reed and Stephen Bradley were recognized for their many state and chapter contributions. Reed received the Silver Roger Sherman Medal. Bradley was presented the Roger Sherman Bronze Medal.

Toby Chamberlain was presented the Meritorious Service Medal.

Brigadier General (retired) Louis Myers was presented the Bronze Good Citizenship Medal.

Three Springfield Chapter member spouses received Sons of the American Revolution awards presented to Daughters of the American Revolution Awards.

Sue Chamberlain and Cheryl Chamblin received Daughters of Liberty Medals. Tina Robinson received the Martha Washington Medal. In addition, Illinois DAR State Regent Gloria Fathom, who attended the meeting, was the recipient of the DAR Medal of Appreciation.

(General J. Bartholomew Chapter) was presented the National Society Silver Roger Sherman Medal at the May Annual Awards Dinner.

Our Newest Members

Three new members have had their applications approved and have joined the Springfield Chapter. When you meet them, introduce yourself.

Donald Eugene Smith, who lives in Springfield, is a descendent of Patriot Lazarus Gatlin who was a member of the North Carolina Continental Line.

Randall Eugene Smith, is Donald’s son and also lists Lazarus Gatlin as his Patriot. Randall lives in Springfield.

Gary Freese, who lives in Lincoln, is a descendent of Patriot John Hofffacker who performed Public Service and was a member of the York County, PA Militia.

Springfield Chapter President Drew Robinson presented Gary Freese with his Record Copy and Membership Certificate.

Randall Eugene Smith was presented his SAR Record Copy and Membership Certificate by Drew Robinson at the June Springfield Chapter meeting.

Cemetery Marking

Luann McDaniel

Planning for the Springfield Chapter cemetery marking for Patriot Luann McDaniel at the Dawson, IL cemetery is nearing completion.

The dedication and unveiling of the cemetery marker is scheduled for Saturday, October 6 at 2:00 P.M. with a reception to follow at Compatriot Bob Dennison’s home. We will need members of the color guard to attend in uniform.

If you can help setting the marker, it will be installed Saturday, September 8th at 9:00 a.m.

Outstanding Citizenship Awards

Students from 22 area high schools were presented SAR Certificates and Pins at the annual Springfield Chapter Good Citizenship Lunch on April 14.

The Students were selected by their school administrators based on personal values and patriotism.

Springfield Chapter Vice President Stan Buckles presented Chatham High School Senior Rayla Sallenger with the SAR Good Citizenship Certificate and Pin.

Silver Roger Sherman Medal

Springfield Chapter President Drew Roberson presented the Silver Roger Sherman Medal to Compatriot George Tinkham for his work as chairman of both the Illinois Society and Springfield Eagle Scout Programs.

National Congress

Springfield Chapter Compatriots Toby Chamberlain and ILSSAR President Dick Chamblin attended the 2018 SAR Annual Congress in Houston, TX. During the Congress Chamberlain was given the Oath of Office as Trustee and Chamblin the alternate National Trustee.

2018 State Fair Color Guard

The Illinois Sons of the American Revolution combined Color Guard was in the Honors Section leading this year’s Illinois State Fair Parade

Springfield Chapter President Drew Robinson carried the ILSSAR Banner, Springfield Chapter Vice President Stan Buckles carried the United States Flag, and was accompanied by Captain Zeally Moss member Tom Ashby.
